  Le Café Chaos a besoin de votre aide

  Comme vous le savez sûrement déjà, la Coopérative du Café Chaos s’est dédiée à la scène musicale émergente depuis plus de 11 ans. Jusqu’à la fin du mois de mai dernier, sois à l’entrée en vigueur de la loi sur le tabac, le Café Chaos atteignait son seuil de rentabilité. Malheureusement, depuis ce temps, les ventes ont connus une baisse drastique (environ 40%) qui met en péril l’existence même de la coopérative. Une conséqunce directe de la loi sur le tabac, c’est donc une vingtaine d’emplois qui sont menacés par cette situation critique. Et malgré que nous tentons toujours de trouver des solutions afin d’augmenter nos revenus pour nous permettre de passer cette période de transition dure et ainsi faire profiter la scène de notre lieu de diffusion et sauver nos emplois, pour ce faire, nous avons toutefois besoin de votre aide. Que vous soyez un groupe, une compagnie de production, une compagnie de disque, un média ou simplement un amateur de musique underground, votre soutien est vital pour la survie de notre entreprise au moment actuel.
  
  Nous vous invitons donc non seulement à encourager votre scène, en venant voir des spectacles, en les organisant ou en diffusant les informations contenues dans ce communiqué, mais aussi de nous contacter et de nous partager vos idées. Si vous avez le goût de vous impliquer, soit physiquement, financièrement ou autrement, on vous invite à assister à une réunion publique qui se tiendra lundi le 5 février à 18h30 dans la salle de spectacle au deuxième étage du Café Chaos.
  
  Nous vous invitons aussi à venir écouter la musique qui se fait ici lors de nos 5@7 scène locale quotidiens, commandité par le journal gratuit BangBang, tout en consommant des produits de micro brasseries locales ou une tasse de café ou thé équitable/biologique. Envoyez-nous aussi vos démos et albums pour les entendre diffusés dans les playlists scène locale au Chaos.

  Historique courte de la coopérative
  La Coopérative du Café Chaos est en opération depuis le 27 août 1995 sur la rue St-Denis à Montréal. Bien qu'ayant débuté ses opérations avec des moyens restreints, elle a vite prit de l'expansion en ajoutant un deuxième étage et deux terrasses en 1996. Le Café a aussi très vite fait sa place dans le milieu de la relève artistique et musicale ainsi que celui du mouvement coopératif à Montréal, et jouit maintenant, après 11 ans d'existence, d'une certaine notoriété à travers le Québec et même sur la scène internationale. Ainsi, elle permet à une vingtaine de jeunes adultes d'occuper un emploi, dans lequel ils sont impliqués personnellement et financièrement. Tandis qu'il y a maintenant plusieurs lieux coopératifs au Québec qui soutiennent la scène locale, le Chaos était le premier lieu coopératif à diffuser et produire des événements uniquement de la relève 362 jours par année.
  
  En novembre 2002, après 7 ans d'opérations et plus de mille spectacles au 1635-37 St-Denis, la coopérative a dû déménager suite à la décision du propriétaire de la bâtisse de ne pas renouveler le bail. Malgré tout, l'équipe s'est mobilisée et la coopérative a réussi à trouver du financement, rouvrant ses portes le 13 décembre 2002 au 2031 St-Denis, un coin de rue au nord des anciens locaux. Les nouveaux locaux ont permis la construction d'une nouvelle salle de spectacle ayant deux fois la capacité (et un nouveau système de son et d'éclairage professionnel) de l'ancienne salle, mais cette fois-ci il n'y avait pas de terrasses ni de cuisine.
  
  Suivant le déménagement et quelques retards d'ouverture de la très attendue nouvelle salle de spectacles, la clientèle est restée fidèle et a suivit les jeunes chaotiques à leur nouvel emplacement. Au début de 2006, la coopérative jouissait d'une clientèle fidèle et atteignait son seuil de rentabilité et tout semblait aller pour le mieux. Mais c'est avec l'entrée en vigueur des modifications de la Loi sur le tabac le 31 mai 2006 que la situation a tournée pour le pire. Ayant une clientèle jeune de 18-25 ans majoritairement fumeur et n'ayant pas de terrasse, la nouvelle loi a eu des effets désastreux pour le Café et a amené une baisse drastique de ventes à partir du mois de juillet 2006, et en janvier 2007 la situation ne s'est pas du tout améliorée. La fermeture de la coopérative et la perte d'une vingtaine d'emplois sont donc maintenant inévitables si le Café ne trouve pas une solution pour combler la perte d'une majorité de sa clientèle.

  As you are probably aware, Café Chaos has been dedicated to the local DIY, underground music scene for over 11 years now, offering live shows, local artisit exhibits, conferences, public events, etc. However, in May 2006, when Café Chaos had finally managed to reach a financially stable point, the Quebec government introduced the new law banning all smoking in bars. This law had an immediate and very devastating effect for us, and sadly, since then, our sales witnessed a drastic drop (almost 40%), to the point where the cooperative and its 20+ young employees is now on the verge of closing its doors forever. This critical situation is a direct result of the no-smoking law, and while we are doing our best to weather this quiet period and bring our sales back up to a sustainable level, we need your help. Café Chaos has long been a focal point for the underground music scene, both local and international, and now we are asking for your help. Whether you are a band, a production company, a record label, a media representative or simply an underground music fan, your support at this time is vital for our cooperative to survive.
  
  Thus, we not only urge you to support by attending shows, booking them or spreading the information contained in this communiqué, but also to contact us and share any ideas that you may have that will help us survive this tough period of transition. If you are interested in lending a hand, be it physical, financial or otherwise, or simply listening to what we have to say, we invite you to attend a public gathering to be held at the café on Monday February 5th at 6:30 pm, in the second floor concert hall.
  
  We also invite you to come and listen to *local only* music during our daily happy hour (5 to 7pm), sponsored by the free newspaper, BangBang, while enjoying a product from one of our fine local micro breweries or a fair trade/organic cup of coffee or tea.   Short history of the Cooperative
  The Café Chaos worker’s cooperative opened its doors on August 27, 1995, on St-Denis street in Montreal. Though launching its operations on a tight budget, the coop quickly expanded in early 1996 to include a basement that brought with it two terraces. The Café also quickly made its mark on the underground, DIY music and arts scene in addition to the cooperative movement in Montreal, and after eleven years, it now enjoys a well-earned reputation not only across Quebec but also on the international level. Thus the cooperative provides an employment opportunity for some twenty young adults; one in which they are involved both personally and financially. Despite there now being several workers’ cooperatives that support the emerging arts and music industries, Chaos was the first cooperative to produce as well as present events entirely geared towards beginning acts 362 days a year!
  
  In November 2002, after 7 years and more than a thousand live performances at 1635-37 St-Denis street, the cooperative was forced to seek a new home as the landlord decided not to renew the lease. Despite all odds, the team came together and the Café successfully moved to its new and current location at 2031-35 St-Denis street, one block north of its previous one. The new premises allowed the construction of a new concert hall with twice the capacity (and a sparkling new professional sound and lighting system) of the old one. Unfortunately, the new building did not come with a terrace or provide space for a kitchen.
  
  After the move and despite several delays in opening the highly awaited new concert hall, the clientele remained loyal and followed the Café to its new home. At the beginning of 2006, the cooperative enjoyed a strong and loyal clientele base and had become financially stable; all seemed well and everyone was happy. However, changes to the tobacco law, which took effect on May 31, 2006, brought a turn for the worse. The 18-25 young clientele of predominantly smokers quickly abandoned the terrace-lacking Café and headed to wider open pastures where they could smoke outdoors. The effects of the new tobacco law, banning smoking in bars, were disastrous and immediate and sales fell almost 40% after the first month and in January 2007, they have yet to recover. The closure of the cooperative and subsequent loss of twenty plus jobs is now inevitable if the cooperative does not find a way to make up for the loss of the majority of its clients.
