While it can be argued that some cats indeed have nine lives, the same cannot always be said about metal and hardcore bands, with even the luckiest enjoying two but rarely more. Sprouting up nearly six years ago from the extreme music mecca of Canada and even North America at large, Montreal Quebec, A Perfect Murder beat the odds and are now on their third or fourth life at least. But time is still on their side; the band began recording when still in their teens, highlighting an early appetite for crafting heavy music not unlike legendary acts Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Pantera did during their formative years.
And very much like those bands A Perfect Murder were onto something from the beginning, releasing a riff-laden, brick of a debut EP in 2001, Blood Covered Words, on local indie Cyclop Media (Mi Amore, Cobra Noir) which was immediately picked up by dominant US distros Very, Lumberjack, and No Idea. The band showed taste for quality metal, boldly asserting influence from Crowbar, Testament, and Metallica. Despite laying claim to a lion-like roar strikingly similar to Sepultura's Max Cavalera, founder and sole songwriter Carl Bouchard stepped down from the vocal position for their debut full-length in 2003, Cease To Suffer, in order to intensify the guitar-oriented songwriting that has since become A Perfect Murder's calling card. In addition to touring with local cult hardcore acts A Death For Every Sin (Alveran) and In Dying Days (One Day Savior), the band shared stages with Terror, Every Time I Die, Throwdown, Eighteen Visions, and Bleeding Through. Rejuvenated by new vocalist Carl Pellerin, A Perfect Murder seemed unstoppable, attracting the attention of revolutionary indie label Victory Records, which signed the band to a multi-album deal the following year. Before releasing their first album for the label, they recorded Rehearsal, an EP with two new songs and covers of Metallica, Slayer, and Black Sabbath classics, to complete their contract to Cyclop. If people's ears didn't catch A Perfect Murder's guitar-driven hardcore before, they certainly did after the EP came out.
In 2004 the band released their Victory debut, Unbroken, to critical acclaim and increasingly prolific touring alongside The Red Chord, Shai Hulud, Misery Signals, and Martyr AD, plus many others. It featured scene legend Karl Buechner (Earth Crisis, The Path Of Resistance, Freya) lending his vocals to the tough guy anthem No Truce, and was expertly produced by Eric Rachel (Hatebreed, All Out War, Sepultura, Buried Alive, Turmoil). An internal shakeup soon occurred, with numerous members departing to pursue a different direction. In the two years that have followed, it has seen the band release the southern-tinged, as well as one of the top three selling metal albums of 2005, Strength Through Vengeance under the powerful vocal prowess of Nashville, Tennessee native and newcomer Kevin Randel . Rounding out their strongest lineup to date is longtime drummer/co-songwriter Yan Chausse, and new additions Francois Michel Labrie on bass and Kyrill Ducharme on guitar, respectively. The success of the new album and revised lineup saw the band partake in its most high profile and successful tours to date alongside Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, Kreator, and Soilent Green in 2005-2006.
The fall of 2006 saw the band venture off to Europe as part of the Hell On Earth tour, playing alongside metalcore greats God Forbid, Full Blown Chaos, and Heaven Shall Burn. Studio time with acclaimed producer Pierre Remillard (Cryptopsy, Starkweather) is already booked for their return in early 2007, at which point their fourth album will be recorded for a spring release, followed by worldwide touring. The band seems poised to soldier on in creating and carving out their own unique legacy in today's metal and hardcore scene despite it's shaky beginnings. While they are taking a back to basics approach to all aspects of their current activities, A Perfect Murder are hungrier than ever to finish what they started years ago: Uniting legions of metal and hardcore fans, in one pit, for once and for all.
